MARY Gauthier, reputed to be the finest US singer/songwriter of her generation, is singing the story of her life at a fundraiser for the Foundling Museum, Brunswick Square, on Tuesday April 26. As an orphan herself, she insisted that the only London performance during an extensive UK tour should be at the site of the Foundling Hospital in Bloomsbury.
“I was born to an unwed mother in 1962 and adopted shortly after,” she says. “I left my adopted family at 15
and wandered for years looking for, but never quite finding a place that felt like home. When I was 45 years old, I searched for, found but was denied a meeting with my birth mother.”
Her moving song-cycle at the Foundling Museum is about her search for meaning, identity and explanation of the ‘orphan feeling’ she’s had since she was a child.
