Rock and Pop: Jessie J @ Koko

JESSIE J has widely been billed as the next big thing. Already hugely successful as a songwriter, she has written songs for Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Mylie Cyrus, has already won this year’s Brits Critics’ Choice award, and has charted at number 2 for her debut single Do it Like a Dude.
But before seeing her perform live, I had no idea of the extent of her vocal talent. Putting X Factor popstars to shame, she filled Koko on Tuesday night with her massive pipes, performing a number of songs from her soon to be released album Who You Are without a single bum note.
Having written a number of the songs with other artists in mind, there are glimpses of Aguilera and Rihanna, but all delivered with her own style and interspersed with down-to-earth Essex chat.
Jessie was only the second act to perform at the televised MTV gig, with London trio Ruff Diamonds kicking the night off and rapper Tinchy Stryder headlining.
But it was the Essex girl that got the biggest reception from crowd – who seemed to know every word of the not-yet-released songs – and it was only after her performance that the bar filled up.
