THERE'S a bumper “come and play” at the Barbican this weekend with opportunities for youngsters and accompanied adults to try out lots of instruments, make their own, join a rock ensemble, sing in a choir or play along to a silent film.
Saturday’s events are for families with children aged three upwards.
There’s a series of “have-a-go” one-hour sessions through the day where children can explore folk music with Urban Folk Quartet, pop music with Lazy Habits and rhythm with percussion ensemble Sankorfa or play in an orchestra or jazz band.
Alternatively, there are workshops on how to make a wind or percussion instrument.
Children can sing-along to Disney classic Beauty and the Beast or play-along on any instrument to Laurel and Hardy classic You’re Darn Tooting where they attempt to move a piano.
Sunday’s events are for young people and adults.
There are two-hour sessions on playing in a rock band or exploring how to play percussion instruments or tinkling the ivories, under-15s in the morning, over-15s in the afternoon.
There are two five-hour scratch workshops, one where anyone can bring along any sort of instrument to play with Urban Folk Quartet or get into singing soul, African, beatbox, jazz and more with Sense of Sound vocalists.
All events take place in the Barbican or neighbouring Guildhall School of Music.
• Workshops are free except making a wind instrument (£2). Disney sing-along costs £9 or £7 for Saturday Family Film Club members (free membership); the Laurel and Hardy play-along cost £3. www.barbican.org.uk
