A NEW big jazz band formed by West Hampstead trumpeter Jack Davies is making its debut tomorrow (Friday) at the Forge in Delancey Street, Camden Town.

The 16-strong band includes trumpeter Freddie Gavita, bass player Calum Gourlay, guitarist Alex Monk and saxist Josh Arcoleo.

Most of the band are local, hailing from Kilburn, West Hampstead and Willesden Green, as these areas seem to house some of the best young jazz musicians in London at the moment.

“I’m starting my own band as I’ve got a lot of music of my own that I want to play,” says Davies. “I’m really interested in the tradition of innovative British big band music – Kenny Wheeler, Loose Tubes and Colin Townes to name a few – and hope to carry on that tradition.

“I’m very excited about it as the band has been sounding amazing in rehearsal.”

Jack Davies has won a big reputation in north London’s jazz community for launching the successful Sunday evening gigs at the North London Tavern on the Kilburn High Road.

Launched in the spring, the weekly double bill has a keen following.

Next month, too, he’s putting on two gigs at the NLT as part of the London Jazz Festival.
