THERE'S a feast of guitar playing at The London Guitar Festival at Kings Place in York Way, Kings Cross.
Along with multi-stylistic concerts, there are some really interesting workshops and masterclasses planned for this Friday and over the weekend.
Playing and taking workshops/master-classes are international lutenist Nigel North, flamenco guitarist Javiar Conde and jazz guitarist Mike Outram.
In addition, Rockschool’s James Uings will host a workshop on the top ten guitar riffs of all time, showing how killer riffs are played.
By way of complete contrast, a restored print of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1929 silent classic Blackmail is being shown at the Barbican on Sunday evening accompanied by Neil Brand’s new score performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Timothy Brock. The silent film/Brand score was premiered to great acclaim at an outdoor performance attended by 500 people in Bologna two years ago.
On Wednesday at the Barbican, the Indian festival of Diwali is being celebrated with an evening of music for the soul played by flute maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia accompanied by tabla legend Yogesh Samsi. The evening will include a performance of the ancient Ramayana epic by Vayu Naidu’s story-telling theatre company. www.barbican. org.uk/contemporary
North London composers: you’re invited to enter a competition for a £2,000 commission to compose a 20-minute work for City Chorus, the non-audition London based mixed choir. Ideally, the music will be original and exciting yet within the capabilities of the choir’s amateur singers.
