THERE’S a plethora of choice for jazz enthusiasts again as the autumn season gets into full swing. Reminders of Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Witherspoon and Ray Charles can be heard at The Forge tomorrow (Friday) when singer TJ Johnson gets into his stride.
Very different will be United Vibrations at Kings Place on Saturday evening. The young band are said to “mix ska with raw punk energy and blistering jazz harmonies”, expressing the high-tempo, multicultural frenzy of London.
More leisurely, flautist Gareth Lockrane will playing for the Sunday lunchtime crowd when he joins Pete Chapman’s Trio at the Princess of Wales, Primrose Hill. Gareth can usually be heard playing with one of his bands, Grooveyard or his septet or his Big Band. So there should be strong interest in hearing his flute played with different musicians.
Sunday evening has another great double bill at the North London Tavern in Kilburn High Road. Both the Sam Leak Group and the Tom Taylor Trio will be playing for Kilburnian jazz enthusiasts.
Monday evening has Bruno Heinen’s “Tierkreis” playing at The Oxford in Kentish Town Road; Tuesday has Highgate altoist Christian playing with the Anrea Pozza Quintet – and legendary saxist Stan Sulzmann; and Wednesday has vibrophonist Jim Hart and his band at Map Café in Grafton Road, Kentish Town.
Thursday has a new rush hour venture at St George’s Bloomsbury. Australian born singer Tazina Frank will perform an hour of classic jazz ballads accompanied by guitarist Barry Langton while listeners enjoy a glass of wine.
