ADVANCE booking for London Jazz Festival gigs in November are well under way with some top-star musicians nearly sold out.

The festival runs from November 12-21 at venues all over town.

Sonny Rollins, now 80 but as exciting as 50 years ago, is back at the Barbican on the 20th; Hugh Masekela is playing the Royal Festival Hall with vocal trio The Mahotella Queens on the 12th; and Italian singer-song writer Paolo Conte is at the Royal Albert Hall on the 16th.

And there will be lots of exciting musicians playing north London venues, particularly at established jazz haunts such as The Vortex in Dalston and Jazz Café in Camden Town.

The Kings Place arts centre in York Way, King’s Cross, has saxophonist Denys Baptiste’s new quartet and The Bad Plus playing with singer Wendy Lewis one night and multi-instrumentalist Django Bates the next. The Forge in Delancey Street, Camden Town, has a dozen LJF gigs, ranging from Gareth Lockrane’s Grooveyard and pianist John Law to the Noszferatu and Troyka bands and legendary vibraphonist Orphy Robinson.

Green Note in Parkway, Camden Town, has several interesting gigs, including prodigious young pianist Tim Hewson; a fabulous double bill involving Shabaka Hutchings and Sam Leak’s Aquarium; and the Sam Crowe Group.

Festival gigs are booked at the North London Tavern in Kilburn; The Oxford in Kentish Town Road; Charlie Wright’s in Hoxton; Spice of Life at Cambridge Circus, Soho; Bloomsbury Ballroom in Southampton Row; Arts Depot in North Finchley; The Green Man in Euston Road.
