CALL it the summertime blues, but it sometimes seems every band is either identikit indie or an electro duo with a feisty girl and geeky guy. So all hail to Lightning Strikes the Empire State, a band who play music like they mean it, and not just because it goes well with their haircuts.
Their melodic new-wave songs of love and life, lightness and dark, are delivered with the bitter sweetness of a smile on the scaffold.
After memorable gigs across Camden and beyond they’ve revamped their set and their return to the stage is the pick of the next Hot Vox Festival at Proud Camden on Monday, September 13.
With up to 10 bands on three stages this new night offers something different in Camden’s crowded musical marketplace.
Also very much worth a listen are Ghosts You Echo, an eerie lo-fi blend of Victoria Wijeratne’s vocals with acoustic instruments and drum machine.
The Meat and Onions Gang offer raucous punky tales of the city, and John Tubby serves up heartfelt singer-songwriting.
More bands to be announced, and all less than a fiver in advance – this is one for those who want music and a bit of festival atmosphere without the rain.
