THE last cream tea concert of the season at St Martin-in-the-Fields on Monday will involve a delightful cello recital given by Rowena Calvert, one of our most accomplished and experienced cellists.
She’ll be playing Beethoven’s Sonata in C, De Falla’s Suite Populaire and Frank’s Sonata in A.
Her accompanist will be Warren Mailley-Smith, rapidly establishing himself as one of the best pianists of his generation.
He’ll be back at St Martin’s the following evening to give a recital on his own.
There’s quite a mixture of pieces in his programme, Mozart’s A Minor Sonata, Beethoven’s C Minor, familiarly known as the Pathetique, and four Chopin works.
But the evening’s highlight will the piano version of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the composer’s most popular work.
