NOW that he’s retired as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, saxophonist Art Themen is enjoying his seventies playing as much jazz as possible.
That’s a boon for Kentish Town jazz enthusiasts as he’s able to play at Map Café, the bijoux jazz haunt on Grafton Road on Wednesday evening.
Over the years, he’s played with most of the jazz “greats” in this country and abroad – Michael Garrick, Ian Carr, Nat Adderley, Stan Tracey and Graham Collier among them.
Originally, his style owed much to the influence of Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. Later influences have included such disparate saxophonists as Coleman Hawkins, Evan Parker and the “sheets of sound”
John Coltrane.
