THE British Jazz Festival is moving into its second week at Ronnie Scott’s in Soho with some fine musicians playing at the club.
Appearing this Friday evening, August 6, the Laurence Cottle Big Band has been a firm favourite at the club for many years.
Cottle himself is one of the country’s finest bass guitarists, and a celebrated arranger and composer to boot, and his band showcases the entire range of musical abilities. Monday evening, August 9, will see a gathering of jazz stars at the club to celebrate and pay tribute to Sir John Dankworth, the saxophonist/composer who died earlier this year.
The following evening, Tuesday, August 10, is being given over to the London Improvisers Orchestra, the Dalston-based band formed in the late 1990s and now ranking as one of our top improvisation-based groups.
Joining the orchestra will be well-known saxophonist Jason Yarde.
Although classical music concerts are thin on the ground during these holiday weeks, there are one or two well worth catching.
The Beethoven Piano Society of Europe’s lunchtime concert at St Martin-in-the-Fields on Tuesday is being given by Harvey Dagul and Isabel Beyer, the celebrated duo who have been playing together for nearly 60 years, delighting audiences worldwide.
They will be playing Beethoven’s Polonaise and Schumann’s Four Hand Pieces at the lunchtime concert.
Later that day, at 6.30pm, early music enthusiasts will want to hear inspiring harpsichord player Hila Katz giving a recital at the Handel House Museum in Mayfair.
Then, on Wednesday, there’s opening night of the Bolshoi Opera in Eugene Onegin at the Royal Opera House.
