OPERA fans get a chance to hear one of the first Chinese singers of classical opera this Sunday at St George’s, in Bloomsbury.
Li Li will be singing Mozart, Puccini, Massanet and Tippett along with music set to two Chinese poems, Red Bean and A Glass of Wine.
While we’re quite used to some brilliant Chinese instrumentalists, not so many Chinese singers have overcome the difficulties of performing song and opera in different European languages.
“Chinese certainly is very different from European languages,” says Li Li. “But language coaching is quite advanced nowadays. Given the right teaching, pronunciation differences can be overcome in basically any language.”
After graduating from Beijing National University two years ago, Li Li came to this country to continue her studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire.
