SOUNDS of hatches battening down can be heard at music venues all over town as the holidays get into full swing.

But one or two keep going valiantly with their eye on particular audiences.

St Martin-in-the-Fields has a full programme of classical concerts, recitals and jazz gigs. Some of the programming is aimed at catching passing tourist traffic looking for some easy listening entertainment.

There are four Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at St Martin’s over the next few weeks and several performances of Bach concertos. On offer are Brilliant Baroque by Candlelight, Baroque Extravaganza by Candlelight and Mozart by Candlelight and, if that’s not enough, there’s Mozart and Handel, Bach and Handel and Haydn and Handel.

A new addition to the jazz fixture list during the holidays is Map Café, the bijoux Kentish Town haunt.

It has assembled a stellar line-up of jazz musicians to play at its regular Sunday afternoon jazz & jam sessions and Nomad Jazz at the Map on Wednesday evenings.

Gospel Oak bass player Cai Marle-Garcia, usually known as ‘Mr Ears,’ hosts the jazz & jam sessions. There’s a different band each Sunday comprising some top names.

Joining the band on August 8 will be pianist Michael Garrick and his trumpeter son Gabriel, and jammers will be able to join them later in the session.

Musicians playing at the Wednesday evening gigs include multi-reedsman Andy Panayi, saxophonist Art Theman, and reedsman Alan Barnes.
