SONNY Rollins is coming back again to celebrate his 80th birthday with his legion of fans over here.
Rollins, the original saxophone colossus, will be playing his tenor again at the London Jazz Festival in the autumn. If last year’s sell-out performance is anything to go by, it should truly be a jazz concert to remember. This time, he’s bringing over a new band from the States to play material selected from his astonishing six decades in jazz. The concert of soaring Rollins saxophone magic will be on Saturday, November 20. Details of the concert are among the first of the LJF shows to be released. Other musicians booked so far include Hugh Masekela, the Mahotella Queens, pianist Brad Mehldau, Paola Conte, Martial Solal and Paco de Lucia.
