TOP-knotch musicians will be playing against the backdrop of classic silent films over the next two days at Kings Place in King’s Cross.
The Sound & Silents mini-fest is being arranged by the Birds Eye View organisation based in Highbury Grove which celebrates and supports the work of outstanding creative women around the world.
Tomorrow (Friday), the Elysian Quartet will be accompanying Mary Pickford in My Best Girl, the 1925 silent classic directed by Sam Taylor. Maggie (Pickford) falls in love with new workmate Joe, unaware that he’s the son of the department store’s owner working under cover to prove his business skills.
On Saturday evening, there’s a bargain double-bill. Acclaimed jazz pianist Zoe Rahman and drummer Patrick Illingworth will be accompanying Ossi Oswalda in the 1918 movie I Don’t Want To Be A Man. Ossi escapes from her dictatorial father by dressing as a man and investigates whether life is more liberated this way. Then experimental vocal trio Juice will be accompanying Gloria Swanson in 1916 film The Danger Girl. When vampish Helene uses her charms on Bobbie, Gloria breaks up the pair by disguising herself as a man to seduce Helene.
