IT was the hunt for a “plus one” that alerted me to the potential difficulties faced by the 02 Arena’s first-ever opera – Bizet’s Carmen presented by Raymond Gubbay.

The magnitude of the venue has served well for huge pop and rock acts – Madonna made it her home and Michael Jackson (RIP) was hoping to do 50 dates there.

When I asked an opera-loving friend if he’d like to join me, he said thanks but he hates the 02 Arena. Others said they’d come to the 02 but not for opera. And this could be the very problem.

The plans for this David Freeman-directed production are ambitious – a 200-strong cast performing in the round, accompanied by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Perhaps those who appreciate opera in its truest form look for a rich, authentic experience – far removed from the corporate sponsorship and concrete caverns of the 02. And it’s possible that those who do enjoy a stadium-type quality to their entertainment are not typical opera-goers.

Promoters will be hoping for a third option – that it’s taken at face value, a stunning spectacle that defies the confines of a traditional opera house.

So the question remains: will Bizet’s masterpiece turn out to be a hollow, all frills, no heart parody? Or will this three-day spectacular, which promises dancers, acrobats and fire-eaters, succeed in bringing opera to the masses? I am hoping for the latter.

Bizet’s Carmen presented by Raymond Gubbay is at the 02 Arena, The O2, Peninsula Square, SE10, 0844 856 0202, www.theo2.co.uk, May 21 and 22 at 7.30pm, May 23 at 2.30pm, from £25
