Published: 22 April 2010

FOUR jazz divas will be singing at an extravaganza of jazz and blues at The Engineer Pub, Primrose Hill, as part of the new Primrose Chill festival on May 1.

The event is being arranged by Belsize Park vocalist and singing teacher Laura Long who hosts jazz nights at the gastro-pub on alternate Sunday evenings.

Popular young singer Esther Bennett will kick off the pub’s Primrose Chill event at 3pm with her quartet together with legendary songwriter/ saxophonist Duncan Lamont, once a regular player with Frank Sinatra.

Veteran Gill Manly, once described as “an amalgam of Bessie Smith and Sarah Vaughan,” will be singing her special take on Ella Fitzgerald songs. Helen Burnett will continue with some raw vocals and bass interplay through a new project devised for the festival circuit with double bassist Fulvio Buccafusco. And regular pub singer Laura Long will perform more blues, latin tunes and vintage standards with The Jazzaholics plus special guest instrumentalists.

There will be a set by the JRM Blues Band featuring slide guitarist Michael Ussher and multi-instrumentalist Tony Kofi will play with his trio.

Jazz Blues Box is at The Engineer Pub, Gloucester Avenue, Primrose Hill, on Saturday May 1, from 3pm-7pm, free entry
