Classical music and jazz: Latest news

Published: 4 March 2010

A NEW Camden opera company is making its debut at Rosslyn Hill Chapel, Hampstead, tomorrow (Friday) in a semi-staged production of Mozart’s opera La Clemenza di Tito. The company, Quintessential Opera, mostly comprises former singers from the Glyndebourne Festival Opera chorus. Musical director is Edmund Connolly, the chapel’s organist.

There’s another treat for opera buffs on Sunday afternoon when four young singers from the Royal Opera House perform at Channing School, Highgate, in a fundraiser for the Highgate Literary and Scientific Society. The standard of singing is likely to be high as all the singers have won scholarships and prizes all over the world and have promising futures in opera.

Two concerts at The Forge, Camden Town, are well worth catching. On Wednesday evening, Misha Formin is giving a violin recital; on Thursday evening, the acclaimed Fibonacci Sequence is joining forces with soprano Ann Mackay to give a recital, starting with Purcell’s “Music for a While.”

Jazzwise, there’ll be an opportunity to hear exciting young trumpeter Damon Brown on Sunday afternoon, playing with Pete Chapman’s trio at the Princess of Wales, Primrose Hill.

There’s some interesting experimental jazz early next week. On Monday, tenor saxophonist Josh Arcoleo and the George Crowley 4 are playing at The Con Bar, St Pancras Way, and on Tuesday, young trumpeter Sam Wooster and his quartet are playing at The Oxford, Kentish Town Road.
