Classical music and jazz: Latest news - The work of Phillip Glass gets an airing at The Barbican and the Coliseum

This is a week for Philip Glass enthusiasts.
At the Barbican on Sunday, there will be a performance of Life On Earth, billed as multi-media breath-taker. The London Symphony Orchestra will play music from Glass’s acclaimed film scores against the backdrop huge visuals about life on the planet. At the Coliseum on Thursday, his opera Satyagra is being revived in an acclaimed production by the English National Opera.
At St George’s, Bloomsbury, classic sonatas will be played by Italian violinist Emanuele de Biase Corneli and the Orsini Ensemble.
At Burgh House in Hampstead on Sunday, pianist Viv McLean is playing Beethoven, Chopin and Gershwin.
Monday’s free lunchtime recital at the Royal Opera House’s Crush Bar is being given by Japanese soprano Eri Nakamura, singing Wolf, Canteloube and Japanese songs.
At Rosslyn Hill Chapel on Thursday, the Florin Ensemble is performing some lovely string pieces by Beethoven, Dvořák, Kodály and Mozart.
There’s a veritable jazz-fest at The Vortex where the Loop Collective’s annual festival is continuing over the next three days, with top jazz musicians ranging from Yolk and Peeping Tom to Golden Age of Steam and Fringe Magnetic.
Map Café in Kentish Town has two pianists in residency next week: Leon Greening from tomorrow (Friday) and Dorian Ford starting on Wednesday.
At the Con Bar in St Pancras Way on Monday, saxophonist George Crawley will be playing some progressive jazz with his combo. At The Oxford in Kentish Town on Tuesday there will be some sizzling jazz served up by the Grooveyard hammond combo of veteran young musicians led by flautist Gareth Lockrane and saxophonist Alex Garnett.
