VOCIFEROUS  campaigners for public libraries have another cause to support:libraries in East Africa.
The Aliki Trust is holding a concert at Lauderdale House, Highgate, next Thursday, to raise funds for community libraries, reading and improved education in Kenya and East Africa.
So far, Aliki (Latin for ‘knowledge) has helped to fund two libraries, staff training, books for schools and bursaries.
Playing at the concert will be violinist Thomas Gould (Belsize Park), soprano Siobhan Blake (Muswell Hill), soprano Emily Phillips (Golders Green) and the Lederman String Quartet.
They’ll perform pieces by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Puccini, Copeland and Roger Quilter.
At the Wigmore Hall this weekend, Schubert’s birthday is being marked by a recital given by top pianists Paul Lewis and Steven Osborne on Saturday and more concerts on Sunday.
At Hampstead Parish Church on Sunday, there’s a fund-raiser for Burgh House being given by The Two Johns, guitarists Etheridge and Williams.
At the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Studio next Wednesday, there’s a revival of Helen Chadwick’s highly acclaimed Dalston Songs about life in a Dalston café.At the Barbican next Wednesday, Yefim Bronfman is playing Prokofiev’s piano concerto with the New York Phil conducted by Alan Gilbert.
