Classical & Jazz - KX Collective at Kings Place, Sunday January 24

Young people in the King’s Cross area have been closely involved in this Sunday’s launch of the KX Collective music project by the London Sinfonietta at the Kings Place arts centre in York Way.

Pieces created by the young people at two workshops and rehearsals will be presented at the event. Assistance in creating the pieces came from composer Fraser Trainer, sound designers Sound Intermedia and principal players from the London Sinfonietta, the leading contemporary music ensemble.

The KX Collective involves 15 young people recruited from local secondary schools.

These currently include Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, City of London Academy Islington, St Mary Magdalene Academy, City and Islington College and the Central Foundation School for boys.

But the intention is to expand the KX Collective as the London Sinfonietta builds further partnerships in the  local area, marking the relocation of its headquarters to Kings Place.

“The idea behind the launch of the collective is to provide opportunities for local young people, aged 14-19, to use

the Sinfonietta’s resources to create their own projects working with performers,” says Andrew Burke, the orchestra’s chief executive.

“They are taking on the responsibility for creating, producing and performing events. Working as a team, they become involved in the whole process from artistic planning, logistics, marketing, sound and lighting design and stage management.”
