Feature: Exhibition - St John’s Wood School bargain
Published: 16 December, 2010
DESPITE the icy weather conditions, the Boundary Gallery’s current exhibition telling the story of the now lost St John’s Wood art schools has proved one of its most successful – both in visitors and in sales.
And with only a week to run – it closes on December 22 – there is still time to buy some surprising Christmas presents.
“The cold weather has obviously kept people away, but nevertheless we have some many new faces,” says proprietor Agi Katz. “That has been wonderful and made the whole thing worthwhile. And we have had some excellent sales.”
The very first was of a Picasso ceramic dish illustrating Don Quixote, made at his Vallauris pottery in 1959. That went for £500.
“We have also sold a small painting by the Bloomsbury artist Vanessa Bell of the garden at Charleston, Surrey, which came from the Duncan Grant estate.
“It sold for £4,000 to a collector of Vanessa Bell whom I last saw in the gallery a decade ago. And we have sold two graphic prints by the Euston Road School artist Victor Pasmore for £1,250 each and also a large print by Leger for £250.
“So that goes to show people there are good works of art to buy for reasonable prices – and in time for Christmas.”
