Cinema: London Socialist Film Co-Op + Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story

THIS Sunday the London Socialist Film Co-Op are presenting films about the Spanish Civil War. A short film I made about the journey Brigaders faced getting into Spain is part of the programme – as long as I can finish editing the thing between now and Sunday! Don’t hold your breath – editing is not my strong point, so you may have to do with a short “making of...” instead of the finished product. Otherwise, there is the simply brilliant Matt Richards film called The Brits Who Fought For Spain followed by Matt, historian Max Arthur and myself discussing the film.

Meanwhile, I hear that people working in the banking industry can claim a free screening at the Prince Charles this weekend – like you’d think they need any more freebies. After all, isn’t shifting cash from one account to another and then getting a whopping bonus for doing it and having the nation bail you out if you muck up just one giant gravy train without a ticket inspector anyway? Still, there is a catch: the indie cinema is screening Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story, which may make even the most shameless banker bury his nose in a bucket of popcorn.

Finally, check out this month’s film festival organised by Human Rights Watch. It starts on Wednesday with the Australian film The Balibo Conspiracy at the Curzon Mayfair. Visit www.hrw.org/iff for more information.
