HS2 must go

Published: 3 June, 2010

• IT’S time to call “time” on Lord Adonis’s crazy HS2 rail scheme, which would have destroyed hundreds of homes immediately north east of Euston and caused disruption to Primrose Hill.

Why Labour believed we needed to duplicate the line from Euston to Birmingham, shaving 20 minutes off the journey time, is beyond me.

Constructing that first five miles west to Old Oak Common would cost billions.

The new government scrapped the plan for a third runway at Heathrow. Any new route for high-speed rail should start there, at Heathrow, with the objective of “modal shift” from flying to training on the routes to Scotland and Manchester. Let Paddington be the terminus, building upon the existing fast railway line to Heathrow.
