YOU might be forgiven for thinking the only place you can watch Punch and Judy is in Prime Minister’s Question Time, writes Jamie Welham.
But those puppetmasters keeping the slapstick tradition alive will evaded the political correctness lobby on Sunday to put on a show in Covent Garden.
The 35th Annual Covent Garden May Fayre and Puppet Festival was held in the grounds of St Paul’s Church in Bedford Street – a stone’s throw from where Samuel Pepys first saw Mr Punch in 1662. Punch and Judy professors and puppeteers from all over the country basked in the sunshine to put on a show for the crowds that descended on the piazza.
Non-puppet enthusiasts were catered for with folk music and Maypole dancing.
