STUDENTS from Maria Fidelis Convent School have a lot to sing about after being named BBC Songs of Praise School Choir of the Year.

The choir from the Somers Town school saw off strong competition at the contest at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the South Bank.

Led by Karen Gibson, students sang the hymn As the Deer Pants for the Water, with a moving solo by soprano Gloria Amponsah.

The judges praised the choir for its beautiful and soulful singing as well as its technical virtuosity.

The students, who received a trophy and £1,000 for the school music department, will feature in a BBC film later in the year.
