ISLINGTON Conservatives confirmed this week they are still contesting parliamentary seats in Islington North and South despite a leaflet campaign to the contrary.

Islington South Conservative candidate Antonia Cox has been the victim of a smear campaign. Residents received leaflets from someone posing as a Tory candidate for the constituency who claimed he was standing down. The leaflets encouraged voters to vote Lib Dem instead.

Ms Cox said: “They have found someone who has not been active in the Conservative Party for over 20 years, called him a Conservative and tried to pull the wool over people’s eyes.

“We’re fielding a full slate of council candidates and we’re fighting hard in both parliamentary seats.”

She added: “The Lib Dems keep talking about 2005 when they thought they should have won. That was then and this is now.

“In 2008, London voted for a Conservative mayor. In 2009, the Conservatives did well in Islington for the European elections.”
