High-speed rail link needs careful, sympathetic, approach
Published: 25th March 2010
• WE organised a meeting for local people to learn about the plans for the High Speed 2 rail link.
We welcome any move to encourage modern, sustainable, transport and bring jobs and business to the area, but there is already a great deal of anger among local people around Euston, Regent’s Park and Fitzrovia at the high-handedness and lack of consultation with which Labour’s unelected transport supremo Lord Adonis has rolled out these plans. Even though these are just proposals at present, the value of properties in the way of the station expansion on Euston Street, Cobourg Street and Drummond Street has already suffered. We want to see residents getting a fair deal in any voluntary purchase scheme, and proper planning to minimise the inevitable chaos and disruption to residents and businesses from the huge construction project. We will carefully scrutinise any subsequent announcements.
