SURELY the cuts haven’t got that bad? Not just yet: the four suited gentlemen, among them Lord Mayor Duncan Sandys, had the shovels out to plant a new plane tree to mark Ash Wednesday.

The tree planting is a tradition which began in 1987 when central London lost so many of its trees during the great storm.

This year the tree was planted between the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre and the Supreme Court off Parliament Square, replacing a tree that had been removed while the court was being regenerated.

Councillor Sandys was joined by Ernest Vincent, the chief executive of the conference centre, Dr John Hall, the Dean of Westminster, and Lord Philips, president of the Supreme Court.
