COUNCIL tax will be frozen across the borough for the next three years, it has been announced.

City Hall said its benchmark band D charge would remain at £687, making it the second lowest in the country.

The decision will be rubber-stamped at a full council next month.

It also said it had identified £9million of savings, with a target of around double that to balance its books.

Council leader Colin Barrow said: “By freezing council tax for the third year we’re showing our commitment to helping local taxpayers through this very difficult downturn. Like our residents, the council bears the impact of the recession but we are determined to retain and improve services rather than cut indiscriminately.”
