THE Royal Free hospital's emergency stroke service, which was controversially dismantled and moved to Bloomsbury, has been short-listed for a prestigious industry award.
The British Medical Journal's Secondary Care Team of the Year recognises “hospital teams that demonstrate improved outcomes of medical and surgical conditions.” The panel praised the Hampstead hospital for giving patients speedy access to received thrombolysis – a clot-busting drug that increases chances of survival.
Stroke victims are now taken to a new emergency specialist unit in University College London Hospital.
They are then transferred back to the Hampstead hospital for rehabilitation.
The winners of the BMJ Awards will be announced on March 10.
