Unbelievable

I READ John Gulliver on the EDL’s static demonstration (This is surely not England? September 8) with interest, but noted one glaring omission.
The most unbelievable sight at these vile gatherings is the waving of the national flag of Israel. Sixty five years after six million Jews were butchered at the hands of fascists, some of the families and descendants of those murdered, are now seen arm-in-arm with the new neo-fascists, screaming messages of hatred and racism at another vulnerable minority, the Muslims.
Is it any wonder so much mistrust exists, when the oppressed become the oppressor, and forgets its own people’s fate and history, in such a short time?

'families...arm-in-arm' is a smear

I'd challenge John Webster to produce any evidence for such images or numbers, 'arm-in-arm' or 'families'. The evidence for Jewish members of the EDL is literally tiny. All representative Jewish bodies in the UK have condemned the EDL, including the Zionist Federation, which has arranged some demonstrations against those who wanted to close Ahava in Covenant Garden. Such Jews are not responsible if EDL turn up to stand on the same stretch of pavement: what are they supposed to do? Break the law and assault them?. Only someone with an a priori animus would equate that unfortunate coincidence with an alliance 'arm-in-arm'.
One might observe that countless pro-Palestinian demonstrations and events contain reactionary groups and individuals, against whom no censure is given whatsoever. Rather the reverse.
Unbelievable, John Webster

That the EDL does so in no way means that Jews support its activities or views.
