Director of housing William Barnes dies
A VISIONARY former director of Camden’s housing department, William Barnes, died aged 92 on Tuesday.
Mr Barnes, who lived in Oak Village, Gospel Oak, ran the housing department from 1971 to 1980 at a time when thousands of homes were taken into council ownership.
He was recognised as one of the most innovative and inspiring housing directors in local government.
He was involved for much of his time in retirement in the Quaker movement, and regularly attended meetings in Hampstead.
He leaves behind his wife Mary and his family have asked that his funeral, on Tuesday, be a private affair.
