DESPITE the gloomy weather on Saturday dedicated gardeners from the Highgate Horticultural Society still had a blooming good day at the 149th summer show.

The determined horticulturists braved the downpours as they transformed the United Reformed Church in South Grove into a giant, vibrant garden.

Society chairman Alan Dallman was among the big winners as he collected a host of top prizes, including the Lady Crosfield Floral Cup and the Alderman Wilfred Rowlands Memorial Cup. Experienced gardener Gary Sycamore also scooped plenty of silverware, including the John Keynes Cup and the Gray Buchanan Cup.

Labour MP Frank Dobson showed his support for the event as he turned out to present all the awards.

“I like flowers, I like vegetables and I like growing them. In the case of vegetables I like eating them too,” he joked.

“I want to congratulate everyone for all their hard work.”

Society secretary Roxane Stirling, who also walked away with some top awards, said: “Whilst we have a healthy number of members and exhibitors we are always keen to recruit more, particularly children.

“So if there are any mums and dads or granny and grandpas out there who want to encourage their little ones to take an interest in growing, come and join us.”
