Post Office held to account

I WAS just too late to get the more “generous” of the inflation-proofed accounts available from the Post Office. The new one has a £15,000 limit.

About a week ago I went to my local main post office in Essex Road (corner of Rotherfield Street) to open this new account. After a protracted delay – my request caused surprise, as if I were asking to buy an elephant – it was finally determined that the relevant stationery had not yet been issued.

After another week or more (in time to miss insulation against the latest inflation horror figures) today I went to the same office. By this time nobody had any notion of what I was talking about.

Their incompetence and ignorance doubtless merits recognition – their contribution to reducing the national debt by debauching the currency.
