Boundary Gallery founder Agi Katz shocks the art world with decision to close after 25 years

Rising rent and online competition blamed for shutdown announced days after anniversary

JUST days after she celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Boundary Gallery with a party, its founder Agi Katz has decided to close it down.

The decision has surprised those who supported the Swiss Cottage gallery in Boundary Road, where Ms Katz displayed her remarkable talent in exhibiting the work of Anglo-Jewish artists, in particular Epstein, Bomberg, Meninsky and Herman, as well as promoting new talent.

“My aim has always been to change the way people look at art and come round to like the pictures I liked,” explained Ms Katz, a refugee from the Hungarian revolution of 1956.

Before flying off to France at the weekend, she said: “After agonising for weeks, I have taken the decision to close the gallery from the end of September, when my lease comes to an end.

“It was hard to decide but there are many reasons which add up my doing this – increased rent and the art world now increasingly to be seen online, for example.

“However, I shall continue to work from my home on the Holly Lodge Estate, Highgate, and I shall exhibit works at art fairs round the country.”

The immediate result is that the gallery is staging a massive art sale, which will run until the end of August. And that will include many bargains.
