Plender Street Surgery could be forced to move by community centre plans

A FAMILY GP practice in Camden Town with more than 3,000 NHS patients could be uprooted under Town Hall plans to demolish a parade of shops and build a new community centre.

The Plender Street Surgery, as well as a hair salon, a butcher’s, a laundrette, an off-licence and a newsagent in the parade would be pulled down under Camden Council’s proposals. The St Pancras Community Centre in the Camden Centre would be moved to the site when the redevelopment of Plender Street is completed.

“We are absolutely determined that this will not happen here,” said Susan Gorrie, chairwoman of the Curnock Estate residents group. “The council’s claim that this is ‘investment in the community’ is wrong. It is more like ‘destruction of the community for profit’.” The Town Hall has recommended the council’s cabinet agree to the plans on July 20 and begin a consultation process.
