FILM actor Rupert Everett was a surprise guest at the opening of a new school playground at St George The Martyr Primary School in Holborn on Friday.
Mr Everett, who is currently playing Henry Higgins in Pygmalion in the West End opposite Kara Tointon, said: “I only just live around the corner, and indeed, it is a lovely place to live near. The neighbours have kids at the school and asked me if I would come along. Naturally, I said yes.”
Mr Everett undertook the role of cutting the ribbon to unveil a multicoloured mosaic plaque made by several mothers and fathers at the school.
The Mary Ward Centre in Holborn taught the parents how to make the mosaic and the school provided their own materials.
Carol Hand, a parent at St George The Martyr, said: “The plaque is primarily made from the parents' own bits of broken crockery and china.
“One mother, for example, contributed her broken lamp from her lounge. Another even found objects buried in the mud along the bank of the Thames. It just makes the plaque that bit more personal.”
