‘First of many’ for Cally Festival
PINK flamingos and salsa dancers mingled with hundreds of festival-goers on Sunday as the Caledonian Road was closed off for the first time in a century.
Giant screens were set out to ensure no one missed the Wimbledon tennis final and numerous stalls selling cakes, crafts and clothes as well as a live music stage kept everyone else entertained at the Cally Festival.
Greg Biggins, 23, a community link worker who played a key part in organising the event, said: “We had a very small-scale Cally Festival in the park in 2007, but this is the first big one. Half the battle was getting people interested. But now we’ve got them, and everyone had such a great time, a Cally Festival for next year is definitely on the cards.”
Miguel Perez and his partner Gemi Landrove, of Banning Way, treated their son Hugo to his first Cally Festival. “It’s an exciting day for Hugo,” said Miguel. “It’s the first of many Cally Festivals for the little one.”
Ward councillor Paul Convery said: “Cally Road is a proud and strong community. It was a marvellous day.”
