Poet Penny Pepper: We didn’t land from Mars
A POET hit the airwaves to discuss her own disability and its effects on her identity and creative work.
Penny Pepper, who lives off Upper Street, Islington, is a regular on the spoken word performance scene, and is taking her work to the Edinburgh Fringe and New York this year.
She appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Four Thought programme, which broadcasts innovative political, cultural and scientific ideas, on Wednesday night.
Speaking ahead of the live broadcast, she said: “Disability is only part of anyone’s identity. At the moment, with so many fights going on, we all need to learn from each other. Disabled people are humans as much as anyone: we didn’t land on a spaceship from Mars.
“I’ve lived an ordinary life: I’ve had two husbands and a mum, but I’ve been disabled since childhood.”
