STAFF from the Town Hall’s housing repairs department have become the first council workers in London to strike over the recent government cuts.
Forty staff refused to go to work on Thursday in protest at the treatment of 11 colleagues who have been forced out of their jobs following a “reorganisation” of the department.
Instead workers formed a picket line outside their Jamestown Road offices to highlight the plight of staff made forcibly redundant despite around 20 vacant posts in the department.
A council spokesman said: “The previous structure, which had 145 posts, has been completely redesigned and different skills and attributes were needed in the new structure which has 113 jobs.”
