Pools: what a shower!

Published: 1 July, 2011

• I’M surprised, given my own dreadful experiences of Aquaterra, that there has not been more outrage during its tenure as the alleged managers of Islington’s leisure facilities (Pool lane switch shows folly of one-size-fits-all thinking, June 24).

After several years of filthy centres, cold showers and poor management of pools and facilities I threw the towel in, and became willing to travel further and pay more just to get away from the weekly frustration of Aquaterra.

I have too many horror stories to relate in one letter. Frontline staff are often lovely, but my bet is that Aquaterra senior management pay themselves a fortune, and the staff not much more than the London minimum wage.

In the 17 years I’ve lived in the borough,  I’ve observed Aquaterra spend a fortune on refurbishments that have ruined once-lovely facilities. I believe the people of Islington and hard-working frontline staff deserve better.

Why can’t we review the facilities and see if we can get better stewardship of our leisure facilities?

Dear Justine

We do not even get London Living Wage. Our Lifeguards are on £6 per hour.
