NHS staff and inpatients at the University College Hospital radiography celebrated the Royal Wedding with their own version of a street party

THE lavish ceremony in Westminster was broadcast on a widescreen television and the ward was transformed with Union Jack hats, flags and bunting.

Under policy rules, staff at UCLH and other NHS hospitals worked for no extra pay on the Friday bank holiday. Julia Solano, radiotherapy services manager, said: “Radiotherapy cancer patients can’t have breaks in treatment. For us, it’s not a problem. Everyone thinks cancer departments are dour and gloomy, but we really had some fun with the patients.”

Staff met Ed Miliband last month when the Labour leader popped in to find out about the hospital’s advances in cancer care. “I love UCLH,” he told them.

However, there is no staff party planned for Mr Miliband’s wedding next month.
