A POPULAR amateur footballer has been killed after his cycle collided with a parked car in Newington Green on Good Friday.
Gavin Taylor, 40, from St Paul’s Road, had been cycling with friends at around midnight when he crashed into a stationary Ford Focus in Wolsey Road near the junction with Mildmay Grove North.
Paramedics gave emergency treatment but Mr Taylor died at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel about two hours later.
A builder and decorator, Mr Taylor was a regular with the Hoxton Casuals who play at Market Road in Holloway.
The team’s manager, Keith Flaherty, said: “I have been friends and played football with Gavin for many years. He was always the life and soul of Hoxton Casuals, especially down the pub afterwards. “We have decided to name our Player-of-the-Year award after Gavin to commemorate his unexpected passing away.”
Flowers have been laid at the scene, where a tribute reads: “Dear Gav, I came alive when I was with you.
“You always saw my potential even when I didn’t. You were one of life’s great people. I love you. Phil”.
Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to call 020 8998 5319.
