Mayor Boris opens £800m revamp of King’s Cross station
THE Mayor of London has welcomed spending £800million on an entrance and ticket hall at King’s Cross station in the recession.
Boris Johnson was joined by Minister for London Tessa Jowell to unveil a plaque at the official opening on Friday morning.
He said: “This is more than just a ticket hall – it is a bright, spacious and futuristic addition to the transport network. If there are going to be cuts, these are the kind of things we should avoid [cutting].”
More than 300,000 passengers will use the new facility each day and an underground walkway links the Underground with St Pancras International for the first time.
It is 22 years since 31 people were killed at King’s Cross after the Piccadilly line’s wooden escalators caught fire. Since the tragedy, Mr Dobson has helped campaign for improved safety at the station.
He said he was “very pleased” with the new station, and Ms Jowell added: “King’s Cross had become outdated. It was operating beyond capacity.
“I think spending £800 million is fantastic.” |
