Primary school mentor’s dismissal is upheld by tribunal
A HIGHLY regarded primary school mentor has told of her horror at being sacked for punching a colleague in the mouth following a staff Christmas party.
Phillippa Heath-Philpotts told an employment tribunal that she was acting in self-defence when she landed the blow during a late-night skirmish.
“I’ve never hit anybody before,” she said. “I was scared. I don’t go around hitting people.”
Ms Heath-Philpotts brought an unfair dismissal case after being suspended and then sacked by Carlton Primary School in Kentish Town following the incident last December. An investigation failed to establish who had started the confrontation. The other woman involved was also sacked.
Ms Heath-Philpotts’ representatives said her dismissal was a disproportionate response.
But as governors stood by their decision, Suraj Sudra, a council lawyer representing the school, told the tribunal: “This wasn’t handbags at dawn, this was a serious incident.”
The case was dismissed by the tribunal late on Friday afternoon with panel members describing the case as regrettable. > click here for full story |
