Headteacher quits her job at high-flying girls’ school
THE headteacher at one of London’s most prestigious secondary schools has told of the “difficult decision” to leave her job.
Anne Canning, head of Camden School for Girls, was unavailable for comment yesterday (Wednesday) but informed parents of her resignation through the school’s weekly newsletter. She is set to take up a top education department job at Tower Hamlets council. “This has been a difficult decision for me to make as I so enjoy my job here and of course want the school’s success to continue,” Ms Canning wrote. “The governing body will be making arrangements for the appointment of my successor and I will keep you informed of any developments regarding this.”
The school in Sandall Road, Camden Town, has a reputation for success and top-notch Ofsted reports, and the prospect of good grades is even said to have bumped up nearby house prices.
Former health secretary Patricia Hewitt and Tony Blair’s pollster Lord Gould sent their children there, while former students include actor Emma Thompson and the Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown – a roll call which has led to sneers about the school feeding off a middle-class student base.
In eight years in charge, Ms Canning has proven popular with pupils and staff were said to be devastated when she announced she will leave the school at the end of the spring term. “There will be time for goodbyes later on in the year and in the meantime I am determined to ensure that it is business as usual,” she said in her letter. “I just wanted you to know from me directly and thanks, as always, for all your support for the school.” |
