Blades shine in debut at Nationals
A TEAM of five swordsmen from Camden Fencing Club made their debuts in the National Senior Championships over the weekend at the English Institute of Sport. Cadets Curtis Miller, Soji Aiyenuro, Fabio and Gianfranco Artesi and Jonathon Tait showed off their skills as they took on some of the most promising talents from across the country in Manchester.
Holloway star Curtis produced the Camden club’s most outstanding result after returning home with a bronze medal.
Having won all six of his pool matches, the talented 17-year-old beat seasoned senior John Salfield 15-13 in the last eight.
Curtis just missed out on a place in the final when he was narrowly beaten by two-time champion Chris Buxton in the final four.
The rest of the Camden contingent also acquitted themselves well.
Soji and Fabio won five out of their six pool matches, while Jonathon and Gianfranco both picked up four wins each.
In the final standings, Soji finished 20th, Jonathon finished 24th while twin brothers Fabio and Gianfranco took 33rd and 44th place respectively out of the 98 fencers that competed.
Curtis, Soji, Fabio and Gianfranco then joined forces to compete in the team championships, where they sealed a respectable fifth place out of 19 teams.
