Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 9 July 2009

Heath music event was torment

• I MUST object in the strongest possible terms against the Sweden on Stage event on Hampstead Heath, part of the City of London Festival, on Saturday.
I find it utterly incomprehensible that an event which prides itself on its “green and eco” credentials can inflict so much devastating noise pollution on one of the green spaces of London and its neighbouring residents. This was not “taking care of our environment” as Margot Wallström, European Commission Vice-President calls it in the programme.
It was wrecking a much needed peaceful haven in London. She urges us to take care how we “travel round our local area and what we do with our leisure time”. Indeed.
From 2 o’clock to 9, the bass line of the bands reached our flat half a mile away, inescapably, even with windows shut.
As we know loud music is used for torturing people without drawing blood.
I do not begrudge anyone a party or a good day out, but for God’s sake do it without affecting others. For us this was true torment.
