Daylight robbery!
Striking decisions: Gallant Phoenix go down fighting in mystery disallowed goals cup tie
TOP Camden Sunday League side Phoenix were left feeling hard done by on Sunday when they were robbed of a place in the final of the London Intermediate Cup.
The Division One side had two perfectly good goals disallowed as they were beaten 3-2 in a five-goal thriller against Yavruvatan FC at Wadham Lodge in Walthamstow.
Phoenix got off to a flying start when Ricky Lucas fired them ahead midway through the first-half after making the most of a perfectly-weighted through ball from Dean Humphries.
The Camden-based team looked to have doubled their advantage within minutes when Wayne Moralee headed home from close range, but the officials ruled out the goal for a push in a crowded penalty area.
It proved a costly decision as the Yavruvatan players made the most of their lifeline to battle back and take a 2-1 lead. Phoenix refused to give up and pulled the scores level when captain Darren May bundled the ball home.
Again Yavruvatan managed to edge in front, but with just minutes on the clock Phoenix thought they found an equaliser when Humphries headed the ball past the keeper.
But again the referee ruled out the goal for another infringement in the penalty box.
The result was a disappointing blow for Dave Harber and Karen Marshall, the partners who manage and run the club.
After the game Dave said: “As far as I’m concerned we scored two good goals today that were disallowed and that has cost us a place in the final. “All my players were champions in their own right. “They have given me everything throughout the competition, and have made everyone at the club extremely proud.”
IN the Camden Sunday League, Archway Allstars netted only the third win of their Division One campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Constitution.
With the rarity of a fully-fit squad, Archway started the game brightly and raced into an early lead when Terry O’Neill calmly slotted his shot passed the Con’s keeper.
Wesley Delaney doubled the advantage with a stunning free-kick from just outside the area, before team-mate Lee Mason proved that lightning really can strike twice when he scored an almost identical goal to give the Allstars a 3-0 lead.
O’Neill grabbed the goal of the game when he showed tremendous pace to beat four players before lifting the ball over the advancing keeper to net his second of the afternoon.
Constitution pulled a goal back from the penalty spot but Archway had already done more than enough to take all three points.
The only other Division One game saw CS Maritimo storm to a 4-0 win over Cobden Athletic.
The result means that the title chase will last at least another week as Maritimo are the only team left in the top flight that can still catch runaway leaders Reddot.
